Cantine di Marzo, founded in 1647 by Scipione di Marzo, is the oldest winery in Campania and one of the most historic in Southern Italy. According to legend, Scipione brought Greco di Nola, an ancient Campanian grape variety, to Tufo, giving rise to the famous Greco di Tufo. In 1648, construction began on the family palace and the historic cellars, which still today retain the charm of centuries of winemaking tradition. During the 19th century, the di Marzo family also contributed to the industrial development of the area, thanks to the discovery of a rich sulfur deposit along the Sabato River. This resource transformed Tufo into an important production center, employing hundreds of workers and promoting the spread of viticulture in Irpinia through the “sulfuration” technique. Donato di Marzo, senator of the Kingdom of Italy between 1880 and 1911, played a key role in the development of the province's railway, called the "wine railway", which connected the main wine-growing centers to the Italian and European markets. Officially registered with the Chamber of Commerce of Avellino in 1833, the winery continues to preserve a wine-making tradition that has its roots in the seventeenth century, producing excellent wines that express the authentic soul of the territory.
